Suwa-jinja Shrine Security Light and Handwashing Stone

As a center for silk merchants to purchase raw silk during the Edo period, Fujioka boasted the largest trading volume in the prefecture. The security light and handwashing stone were dedicated to the god of the shrine as a gesture of gratitude by Mitsui Echigoya, a kimono wholesale business that profited in the silk markets held 12 times a month in Fujioka in those days.
